More about Momentum for 13 - 17 year olds
Momentum is a website that can help adolescents learn new ways of managing anxiety and unhappiness. It can also help with some of the more common difficulties that come along with anxiety and unhappiness, such as sleep problems, substance use, unhealthy eating, and a lack of exercise. Watch the clip above or read the information below, to get an idea of how Momentum works. You might find it helpful to involve your parent or caregiver as well.
The Momentum Survey
To get started, you will first answer some questions that will help us create a Momentum program just for you. Your parent can fill in some questions too if you want them to. The questions ask about many different things. Some might sound like you, and some might seem less like you. Momentum uses this information to put together a report for you, and to build a program that suits you best.
The report describes where you are having the most difficulties (and where you are not having any difficulties at all!). If you are 15 years or under, your parent or caregiver (whoever is giving consent for you to participate here) will also get a brief report, but they will not be able to see your specific answers. If you decide to begin the Momentum program, the information sheet and consent form will tell you exactly what parents and caregivers will see.
The other thing you should know is that we will ask you to fill in a short survey every time you do a Momentum session. This is so we can check how you are going and whether or not you need any extra help. If you do, we will let your parent or caregiver know.
The Momentum Program
Your own, personalised Momentum program will include a number of sessions (usually between 7 and 12) that you will complete each week, at a time that suits you. Each session takes about 30-45 minutes. They are fun, include lots of activities (not just boring reading), and you will earn rewards and badges. In fact, young people helped us design Momentum to make sure that you will like it!
Each young person’s Momentum program will be a bit different because each program is tailored to the individual young person. However, all programs will help you to:
- Keep track of your anxiety and/or unhappiness so that you know when to use your new skills.
- Tackle your anxiety and/or unhappiness step-by-step until it seems more manageable.
- Manage your anxiety and/or unhappiness in the moment with skills that calm your mind and body.
- Challenge unhelpful thoughts and find more helpful ways of thinking that will help you feel better.
- Choose extra sessions that might help you with difficult situations.
You will also have your own Momentum dashboard, where you can easily access information, activities, and rewards.

Any young person (aged 7-17 years) living in Australia who would like some help with anxiety and/or unhappiness can use Momentum.
No. Momentum is free for all young people living in Australia.
Your Momentum Program will include between 7 to 12 sessions, each of which will take between 30 to 45 minutes to complete. You will also be given some activities to do outside of the sessions to practice the skills you learn.
Before you begin, Momentum will ask you to fill in some questions that take around 15-20 minutes to complete. Your answers to these questions guide Momentum in creating the right program for you.
Yes! You can stop or take a break any time you want to. Momentum will save what you have done and bring you right back to that spot next time.
If you are 13-16 years old: No. Your parent/caregiver will not be able to see your answers to any of the questions you answer before or during the Momentum program. However, after you complete the initial set of questions, they WILL receive a summary report telling them about the GENERAL areas you are having problems with (or not having problems with). Also, during each session, you will rate how anxious and/or unhappy you are feeling. Again, your parent/caregiver will NOT be able to see your answers. However, they WILL be able to see a graph of your progress. If you are VERY anxious or unhappy, they may also receive an email suggesting you might need some extra help.
If you are 16 or 17 years old: Your parent/caregiver will NOT receive any emails or summary reports unless you specifically want them to. They also won't be able to see anything you type into the Momentum program unless you share this with them yourself.
No. At the moment, Momentum is only available to people living in Australia. We hope to bring Momentum to other countries in the future, though!
Momentum was designed to help young people learn better ways to manage anxiety and unhappiness. It is a self-help program that is NOT monitored by a professional. If you are seeking a formal diagnosis, please consult a medical practitioner or mental health professional.
If you feel like your symptoms are not improving or have become worse, please consult a medical practitioner or mental health professional as soon as possible.
